Figure drawings in ink

A sketch post, in which I post figure drawings that only I am sure to like.

Had a get together with friends, and we all took turns posing and drawing. About half way through we moved over to gesture drawing, which happens to be my favorite. It gives me an excuse to be super loose (I usually worry too much about accuracy) and have fun with the medium. This time around, it was ink, in different forms. The first set there is with a brush pen. Then I moved on to using a crow quill and bamboo quill, and experimenting with it and water. It started off pretty rough, but by that end image there, I’d found a way to work with it I liked.

While these may look like glorified scribbles to some, I’m actually rather happy with them. I like the amount of movement here. The amount of abstraction. My work tends to get too stiff for my liking. I want to bring some of this life into more finished pieces.

Bananna car

Sketch of my car while camping. Trying to loosen up and not worry so much over clean images anymore. It was a fun time killer. I drive a 2003 Mistubishi Lancer. :P

Dr. Sketchys and SOCA

SOCA! We had a pair model for us. I tried a few new ideas for how to do these, and the first one of using watercolor and colored pencil flopped, so I went back to using pen. I was sick this SOCA, so these aren't too accurate, as I was like "buh, wish I could breathe and hear..." haha. I tried to focus more on value and modeling rather than anatomical perfection (obviously). I think next SOCA, depending on the model, I'll be focusing on parts of the form, and not trying to draw the whole thing. 

 And these last two are from the last session of Dr. Sketchy's. It was a voodoo theme, and the model Rio bought her adorable pet snakes with her to model with. They were so cute! The first one here was a challenge of trying to draw her as she was dancing, since our model is also a belly dancer.

Game concept

 This semester I'm taking game design and theory, and I've decided to make a survival horror game set on the Oregon Trail. Up top is the base figure for my soon to be character sheet, and below is a rough sketch of the protagonist, Dahlia, along with one of the creatures in the game. It has fingers for teeth! I'll post the final sketch of the ref sheet as well as the final draft of it as they're finished.

Eels

I'm always terribly happy when I can sneak in odd pictures into school projects. This guy makes an upper and lower case E, and is a visual representation of the sentence "an eel with ears eats eggplant eagerly." He's going to get painted, this is just the base sketch. I'll post the final version of the assignment later!

Penny Get Your Gun

Went to another Dr. Sketchy's session, this one was a western theme. The costumes, especially the second one, were a lot of fun to draw, and definitely not something I get to do from life often. Model was the lovely Pretty Penny, one of our local burlesque dancers.

Vacation doodles

Life drawings done while on vacation in Upstate NY. The left is my second cousin's rocking horse, who was missing an ear, and the right is a clover flower. I didn't know what to do at the bottom, so the hands were a second thought, resulting in some not so good composition.

I've got a bit of a hand motif going on lately. Trying to get more confident with drawing them. The hand on the left is mine, and the monster is more just filler. The right is a combination of two photos I took at Holywood Cemetery.

Bat nosed monster

I actually had planned on drawing something completely different, but this little guy wanted to be seen I guess. Anatomy on him is bad because I was just making it up as I went along. A nice break from all the stuff I've got on my plate right now.

Done in about an hour or less from start to finish. Bat nose!

Three this time

new things

color experiment doodle. Trying flat spaces against rendered ones. Hair done in markers, skin done with acrylics. then just some white ink and a brown micron. Might play with this idea a bit more later when the summer affords me more free time.

Prop night

We had our own little SOCA today at my place, and gathered a bunch of props for people to use. It was tons of fun. Tiffany insisted we give her a mustache in the one on the right there. All of these are done in 10 minutes.

I made Crystal into a fabric angel. :B

Sarah was wearing cat ears, and I just turned them into real ones. It's almost a satirical image of Japan. Can't wait to do this again! there's some other good ones from others and ones I posed for, I'll have to point to them when people post them online.

Faux SOCA

 

Since it was first friday, and the shows were all closed by the time I was done in the crafts dept, myself, Tiffany and Sarah all got together and drew each other.  Each drawing was about 10 minutes, since none of us are professional models, and holding poses past that really sucks. What we're thinking of doing, is every first friday getting together, and possibly bring some kind of interesting prop to interact with to draw each other. This would give us all practice with clothes and with people interactions with objects, so I'm all for doing it. We each got about six pages out of this in about two hours or so. 

 

I drew Tiffany saying arg because she was covering one eye, and we were calling her a pirate. :B It was fun! A relaxed atmosphere, no rush between poses, and we could break any time it was needed. 

School work and hands

 

The first page of my new sketchbook for digital drawing class. Nicole you have weird fingers. Though I don't think I did much better at drawing them. 

IT'S A HAND FORREST. My gross hands and fingers in all of these. Tried over lapping hands, using colors to push them back in space. Don't think it worked so hot. But it was fun.

 

And lastly, concept sketches for my Japanese Tsukumogami, which are possessed objects that come to life after 100 years. They're the main characters for a comic I'm going to be doing in sequential. One's a sandal, and the other is a lantern.

Crunch time

Gotta love those blank, vacant eyes. I'm using my boyfriend Chris as the subject, seeing as how he's always here, and easy to get to model. I know the hand looks super weird, but honestly, in the photo it's really that odd. I actually was worried I gave him too many fingers at first. XD Just because of how much space that hand is taking up.

I'm going to TRY and get this under painting part done by Wednesday afternoon. TRY. Here's hoping. x_x I  can probably get about three more little painting sessions in before that class. And then I have until Dec. 9th to finish this. UGH. So much work to do in about a week. It's pretty ridiculous. Gotta love those big end of the semester projects.

And on a totally unrelated to school note, here's a sketch study I did of a folk singer I enjoy called S. J. Tucker. I've gotten an idea of a piece I'd like to do as a bit of an homage to her, so I'm doing sketches to figure out her face shape and the like. Should be fun. 

Sekhmet

I've been having issues getting technology to work for me, so I've been ragefacing a bit. And today I was griping about how there's a sorry amount of art out there for Egyptian deities, so I drew Sekhmet, the lion headed Goddess of  war who's breath made the desert. She also almost took out humanity according to myth, and was only stopped when she got totally smashed on beer dyed with pomegranate juice to make it look like blood.

I think Anubis unfairly gets a lot of the Egyptian deity lime light, so I'm going to endeavor to draw all the other awesome Egyptian deities. I'd like to draw Hathor, Horus, Sobek, Thoth, Set, Nekhbet, Nut, etc.

Some sketches using colored microns. The hands were going to be a hand forrest, but I deviated for some odd reason. Maybe I'll try again later.

 

Here's the first WIP photo of my final painting for my painting class. I feel so much better now that it's started. It doesn't feel so huge anymore. I think the person in it is what's going to take the longest though. This is just an underpainting. There's actually going to be glazes of color on this once the values are put in. This way, I'll have a uniform green feel to everything.

Took WAY too long on both of these. about an hour and some change a piece. but I was also drawing and talking on AIM, so.....
